History of the Market

Jefferson County on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State supports a thriving network of sustainable farmers, culminating in a glorious presentation of fresh produce, crafts, art and music at the Port Townsend Farmers Market on both Saturdays and Wednesdays. After several years of rapid growth, the Port Townsend market is now the largest farmers market west of Puget Sound.

The Port Townsend Farmers Market was started with seed money from Main Street Program in 1992 and has grown steadily into a bustling center of commerce and community. We strive to create a marketplace where local producers can sell their goods directly to the consumer. We are also dedicated to educating the public about local sustainable agriculture in Jefferson County, and providing a friendly atmosphere for families and neighbors to congregate.

Reveling in the festival atmosphere, more than a thousand people attend each Saturday to directly support local, organic growers.
Overall, frequently some fifty farmers, artisans and food vendors fill the block of Tyler Street while marketgoers enjoy the adjacent park south of Lawrence in the Uptown district of Port Townsend.

Alongside colorful displays of produce, flowers and locally processed foods, artisans from the renowned arts community sell their wares. The scents from Port Townsend's beloved bakeries and food vendors fill the air. Rick Oltman of Cape Cleare Fishery can personally describe the Alaskan source of each salmon that goes onto his grill. Nearby, families listen and dance to the music of venerable local musicians and regional touring acts.

Underscoring the vibrant community celebration are the intentions of building a sustainable food network. Not only does local produce look beautiful and taste better than conventional food or industrially farmed organics, local farmers employ thoughtful methods that are ecologically balanced and create the foundation of a sustainable future. The market provides a direct opportunity to shake the hands that are dedicated to making ecological sustainability a reality.

Although the market is always a celebration of food and community, several festivals showcase the arrival of crops from strawberries to pumpkins. And each market is a bountiful festival of food and genuine confluence of community in Port Townsend.

The Market runs Saturdays from late April or early May through Thanksgiving each year. Saturday hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tyler Street in Uptown in front of the Community Center. On Wednesday afternoons from June through September, you can find a growers' market from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30p.m. in the Uptown district at Lawrence and Polk St.
